Total Parts Plus’ was established to provide obsolescence management solutions for electronic components to companies from defense contracting to commercial industries. Our customers include aerospace, avionics, telecommunications, medical equipment, industrial controls, automotive, and contract manufacturing organizations. With the advent of environmental initiatives and legislation throughout the world, Total Parts Plus expanded its operations to include environmental compliance information to address the impact and reporting requirements on the electronics community.
The new environmental legislation brought on major obsolescence issues for the electronics industry due to the elimination of lead and other harmful substances in electronic components. As the rules of DMSMS management have changed, the core of obsolescence management has remained the same. Companies need to actively manage their electronic components for “changes in status” to minimize the risk to the products they produce and support.
One case in point is the relationship established between Total Parts Plus and a Fortune 500 defense contractor over the past decade. What began as a custom obsolescence management service for one site has expanded to a corporate agreement supporting over 40 locations. Their Total Parts Plus’ obsolescence management services include BOM scrubbing, part research and loading, BOM analysis as well as PCN alerts. Several of the company’s commercial products required environmental compliance information to support the European Union’s REACH legislation reporting and the company engaged Total Parts Plus to provide a data feed to their internal Environmental Compliance Software Program.
Another important service Total Parts Plus provided was custom BOM scrubbing. This process includes “normalizing” manufacturer names for differences such as punctuation or abbreviations and identifying acquisitions both current and historical. Additionally, part numbers are scrubbed for correction, such as typos (I instead of a 1), transposed PNs (2N2222JANTX should be JANTX2N2222) or miscellaneous text embedded within the part number. This was critical to collaboration on solutions between locations.
Once the scrubbing was complete, the BOM was fully imported into the web application which allows for full BOM analysis. The BOM analysis includes visibility to current manufacturing status with approved suppliers. Various reporting options and views are available to quickly identify end-of-life (EOL) dates, find potential alternates and provide projected availability in years based on technology. The user defined PCN alert system was configured to assign specific BOM alerts to individuals, select the type of PCN to receive (EOLs, material changes, etc), and the frequency to be notified.
Since 2000, Total Parts Plus has provided this prime contractor of homeland defense products and services an effective proactive process for obsolescence management and environmental compliance reporting.

Did you know that Total Parts Plus has created a single report accessible from the Material Content Analysis section of the application that allows users to
determine the compliance status of the parts in their bills of materials (BOM) in respect to the RoHS and REACH legislations, as well as identifying any parts containing halogens, lead,
or proprietary substances?
The Compliance Analysis report gives the user the ability to quickly access and download the information in Excel with the compliance data as well as listing other useful details such as compliant date codes, compliant alternates, current production status, and whether a part has partial or full material disclosure down to the homogeneous level. |
